چکیده

The leaf and bark fraction extracts of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (neem) grown in the foothills (subtropical region) of Nepal were evaluated for their antioxidant activity, total phenolic (TP) and total flavonid (TF) contents. HPLC method was employed to quantify the amount of azadirachtin and nimbin present in the seed, leaf and the bark extracts of neem. The result showed that the highest azadirachtin content was found in the methanolic extract of the seed (3300 μg/g dw). Similarly, the hexane fraction of bark showed the highest nimbin content (271 μg/g dw) followed by the methanolic extract (260 μg/g dw). Antioxidant activity was determined by measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, DNA protection assay, metal chelating and the inhibition of peroxidation using linoleic acid system and their results were found at different magnitudes of potency. The results of TP content expressed in tannic acid equivalents ranged from 66.63 to 629.04 μg/mg in the bark extracts and 23.85 to 237.00 μg/mg in the leaf extracts. Likewise, the content of TF expressed in quercetine equivalents ranged from 12.87 to 17.07 μg/mg in the bark and 13.72 to 93.17 μg/mg in the leaf extracts.

Species Sensitive Electrochemical Method for Enrichment of Azadirachtin-A from Neem Seed

Azadirachtin the active principle of Azadirachta-indica J. Juss. (Neem) ranges from 0.3 to 0.6 percent. A simplified procedure, when compared to established methods, has been developed to enrich azadirachtin-A to 50 percent using minimum possible steps without resorting to chromatographic techniques. It involves additional partition with CCl4 before final extraction which removes most of nimbin...

Comprehensive analyses of genomes, transcriptomes and metabolites of neem tree

Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) is one of the most versatile tropical evergreen tree species known in India since the Vedic period (1500 BC-600 BC). Neem tree is a rich source of limonoids, having a wide spectrum of activity against insect pests and microbial pathogens. Complex tetranortriterpenoids such as azadirachtin, salanin and nimbin are the major active principles isolated from neem se...

Photooxygenation of Nimonol, a Tetranortriterpenoid from Azadirachta indica. A. Juss

Nimonol (1), a tetranortriterpenoid isolated from the leaves of Azadirachta indica A. Juss (Meliaceae), upon photolysis undergoes both Diels-Alder and ene reactions with singlet oxygen at different sites leading to 14,15,20,21-diepoxy-23-nimonolactone (3), along with nimonolide (4), which have been well-characterised. The novelty of the reported reactions lies in hitherto unreported formation o...

New antitrypanosomal tetranotriterpenoids from Azadirachta indica.

Organic extracts of the leaves of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. yielded ten antitrypanosomal terpenoids. Three of these (1-3), are novel and are derivatives of nimbolide and nimbin. They were extracted from chloroform fraction of methanol extract. These compounds were found to exhibit strong antitrypanosomal activities against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense with MIC values ranging of 6.9, 15.6 an...

Evaluation of Apoptosis and Autophagy Inducing Potential of Berberis aristata, Azadirachta indica, and Their Synergistic Combinations in Parental and Resistant Human Osteosarcoma Cells

Cancer is a multifactorial disease and hence can be effectively overcome by a multi-constituently therapeutic strategy. Medicinal plant extracts represent a perfect example of such stratagem. However, minimal studies have been done till date that portray the effect of extraction techniques on the phyto-constituent profile of plant extracts and its impact on anticancer activity. In the present s...
